Thomas Hardy (1840-1928)
In the garden
We waited for the sun
To break its cloudy prison
(For day was not yet done,
And night still unbegun)
Leaning by the dial.
After many a trial—
We all silent there—
It burst as new-arisen,
Throwing a shade to where
Time travelled at that minute.
Little saw we in it,
But this much I know,
Of lookers on that shade,
Her towards whom it made
Soonest had to go.
In giardino
Attendevamo che il sole
Rompesse la sua prigione di nubi
(Poiché non era ancora giorno fatto
E la notte non ancora iniziata)
Sporgendosi sulla meridiana.
Dopo molti tentativi –
Noi tutti in silenzio –
S’incendiò come la prima volta
Gettando un’ombra laddove
Il tempo viaggiava in quell’istante.
Poco vi scorgemmo,
Ma molto so di questo:
Di osservatori in quell’ombra,
Verso lei che il sole aveva fatto
Al più presto dovettero andare.

Michael Hartnett (1941-1999)
The hare
It was a green world.
Green thoughts
curled quietly
in her mind’s field.
Cowsmell, milksmell
sweet-root expansion
under ground.
She heard thunder.
The sky fell on her back.
The hill gulped down the sun.
The world was quenched
like a match in wind.
Under her belly’s fur
the litter kicked.
Her eyes were open,
death’s scum destroying
the joy, the great shining.
Forgive me, girl.
I had no knife
to cut your children free.
Forgive me.
La lepre
Era un mondo verde.
Pensieri verdi
si raggomitolavano in silenzio
nel campo della sua mente.
Odore di mucche, di latte
espansione di dolci radici
sottoterra.
Poi udì un tuono.
Il cielo le cadde addosso.
La collina inghiottì il sole.
Il mondo si spense
come un fiammifero al vento.
Sotto la pelliccia del ventre
scalciava viva la nidiata.
Aveva gli occhi aperti,
la schiuma della morte distruggeva
la gioia, il grande splendore.
Perdonami, ragazza.
Non avevo un coltello
per liberarti i figli.
Perdonami.

Philip Larkin (1922-1985)
Going
There is an evening coming in
Across the fields, one never seen before,
That lights no lamps.
Silken it seems at a distance, yet
When it is drawn up over the knees and breast
It brings no comfort.
Where has the tree gone, that locked
Earth to sky? What is under my hands,
That I cannot feel?
What loads my hand down?
Partire
